About work
Field Notes publishes four essays a month, some of them twelve thousand words long, and had been serving them through a template built for product announcements.
Readers were saving pieces to read-later apps because the site itself was unreadable past about four minutes.

The approach
We designed the measure, leading and type scale first and built everything else around them.
Footnotes open in place, images sit in the margin at wide breakpoints, and the whole thing works without a single modal.
The outcome
Median time on page went from 3:10 to 14:40.
Read-later exports fell by two thirds, which is the number the editor actually cared about.
